Who's Doing the Work? Lesson Sets

Stenhouse Publishers
In this groundbreaking classroom resource, Jan Burkins and Kim Yaris map out a systematic approach to helping K‑2 students grow into independent and proficient readers.

Who's Doing the Work, by Jan Burkins and Kim Yaris Who's Doing the Work? Lesson Sets are based on Jan and Kim's bestselling professional book, Who's Doing the Work?: How to Say Less So Readers Can Do More, which grew out of years of collaboration with reading teachers. As editor Maureen Barbieri explains, "After decades of researching, teaching, and consulting across grades in many states, Jan and Kim became concerned that teachers, in their desire to teach reading well, were doing too much scaffolding, jumping in with advice or support whenever students hesitated in reading texts." The authors set out to help K‑2 teachers learn how to trust their intuition and understand when to step back so developing readers can move forward.

Who's Doing the Work Lesson Sets, by Jan Burkins and Kim Yaris After the book's release, teachers began requesting more details about how to implement what the authors call "next generation reading." In response, Jan and Kim have spent the past year developing and field testing these lessons in classrooms across the country.

The lessons support teachers as they learn how to ask good questions, use wait time to encourage student response, employ group and partner work to empower communication among peers, use anchor charts to track and reinforce strategies, and inspire students to think strategically when approaching a new text.

Lesson Sets offer an accessible introduction to read aloud, shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading. They work in conjunction with any reading program and do not require on-site training to implement.

Each grade-level package includes seven different components that support instruction: A copy of Who's Doing the Work professional book, lesson plans, six copies of the shared reading text booklets, children's books, a set of art cards, and access to a comprehensive website with more than 60 minutes of classroom video.
